Black Cat Candy Apples

It is starting to feel like fall in New Jersey and that means it is time for eating apples.  My boyfriend and I went apple picking a few weekends ago and bought way too many apples for two people to eat (thank God they stay good for so long).  In preparation for Halloween, I made these easy Black Cat Candy Apples.

Check out my YouTube video to see how to make these cute candy apples.

Black Cat Candy Apples

Tools:
-Apples
-Rice Krispies treats
-Black and white candy melts
-Wooden sticks
-Cutting tool
-Black and green edible markers
-Small amount of red and white fondant
-Circle and star cookie cutter

First, make the cat eyes.  To do this, roll out a small bowl of white fondant and use the circle cookie cutter to cut out a small circle.  The circle size will be dependent on the size of your apples.  I used relatively small apples so the circle cutter was also small.  Once the fondant circle is cut, use a rolling pin to roll over the circle to make it an oval shape.  Then, using your fingers, gently pinch the ends of the oval to make it look more like an eye shape.  Next, use a black edible marker to cover the sides of the eye and to draw the pupil on the eye.  Finish by using a green edible marker to draw the pupil.

Next, make the cat’s nose using red fondant.  Roll the fondant out and cut out a star (using a cookie cutter).  Then, cut each of the star tips and gently round the points into the shape of a cat’s nose.

After completing the cat eyes and nose, push a wooden stick into each of the apples and set aside.  Next, use a rolling pin (or your fingers) to press down the rice kirspies treat until it is approximately half the height.  Then, cut out triangles (i.e., the cat ears) using a knife.  Make the triangles an appropriate size based on the apple size.

To cover the apple, melt candy melts in a microwave safe bowl, stirring every fifteen seconds until the candy melts are completely melted.  If you find the melted candy melts to be too thick, add some vegetable shortening to the bowl and combine completely.  This should help to thin the candy.  Also, if the candy melts start to set as you are working, just pop the bowl back into the microwave for another 15 seconds to keep the candy fluid.

Attach the ears to the apple by dipping the base into the melted candy melts (only use a small amount other wise the ear will drip) and place the ear on the apple.  Hold the ears in place for a few seconds until the candy melt starts to set.  After attaching the ears, place the apple in the refrigerator in order for the candy melts to harden completely (i.e., between 5-10 minutes).

Next, dip the entire apple in the candy melts.  Try to keep the black candy off of the stick.  Tap your hand (while holding the candy apple) to remove any excess candy from the apple.  Set the apple on a piece of waxed paper and then place in the refrigerator until the candy melts harden completely.

Add the eyes and ears to the chilled apples using a small amount of black candy melt as glue.  Finish the cat face by melting the white candy melts in the microwave and place into a small Ziploc bag.  Cut a very small piece off of the bag corner and pipe the mouth and whiskers onto the apple.

The finished apple turned out super cute!
